The animal skin used in leather will go through any processes beginning from tanning which involves tanning of the hide with vegetable and chemical mix. Salts of aluminum and chromium are generally used in this process. Though salt tanning results in less supple texture of leather product, it is durable nonetheless. The desired hue or color is also obtained due to such mixes.
Brain tanning of mostly buckskin leaves it softer and washable also. The one which are dyed with chromium salt makes for a credible material which is water resistant. There are also different grades of hide in leather which differentiated the texture and the structure foe lather to make accessories like handbags, wallet and other materials which differ in the feel and hardness.
Full grain leather can be said to be the best in the category as they are not interfered with in the process other than the basic removal of hair and the tanning. Top grain leather on the other hand is sanded at one part and the other part uses artificial grain to maintain an evenness to reduce the imperfections. A great example of this is the suede leather which has a velvet and fuzzy feel and look at the top side. Handbags and even belts sometimes use this material and other cases can have suede leather as a covering.
Patent leather process involves coating the original hide with the plastic and most of this is found in lambskin and calfskin to enhance their raw shine. This material of leather is used to make accessories like handbags, wallets and even belts or laces. Nappa leather on the other hand is generally procured from the fetus of the calf and hence used to make high end accessories whose feel is luxurious and very supple. So leather jewelry and casings for articles can use this material besides purse.
Cowhide leather is known for its robust texture and flexible nature and therefore most of the wallets and boots are made from this. Even kangaroo leather is unique in producing these articles like wallets and belts. Ostrich skin is again very expensive and used to make branded and high valued and priced handbags. Alligator and crocodile skin are known for their textured and grainy look and therefore used to make handbags and even shoes and sandals.
Snakeskin and pigskin are shiny and also strong and hence utilized to make articles like boxes and dress accessories like frills, strings and purses along with bracelets and other jewelry. Zebra skin is also used to make jackets and other clothing accessories. Buffalo hide and deer skins are both used to make wallets and shoes besides other materials.
